Clinics
US Lacrosse Level 1 Clinic - Upland High School

Editors Note: We would like to express our appreciation and thanks to everyone involved in making the coaches clinic possible: The Amateur Athletic Foundation (AAF) for providing the funding to support the US Lacrosse Clinic at no charge to the participants; the co-host Greater Los Angeles Chapter of US Lacrosse; Upland High School for providing the refreshments and beautiful location and of course the renowned US Lacrosse Instructor team. This is a great program, it's needed and everyone is a better coach for attending!

Upland High School, Upland, CA, Oct 7, 2006- I have now attended two US Lacrosse Level 1 Clinics, maybe this is a record, but I do hope to someday graduate to Level 2 (as I understand, Level 2 clinics start next year). I must say the second clinic was just as much fun as the first. And after attending two clinics, I feel that I'm starting to get a better feel for the game and how it is coached.

Youth
Wes Cunningham wins Aquafina 'Player for a Day' Contest

It all started with me making contact with Coach Bill Daye, of the Boston Cannons. I asked Bill if he could help me with having Wes, my 8 year old son, be a ball boy for one of the games, specifically Aug 5th which was his birthday. I thought this would make for the best birthday present ever.

Bill helped me with getting it set up with the front office and we were off and running making plans for the big surprise. I didn't say anything to Wes, as you never know what can happen, and happen it did. The day before the game, I got a call from the front office advising me that for some reason Wes couldn't be the ball boy for the August 5th game.  More...

Editor’s note: we are pleased to report that youth lacrosse is growing like crazy at the beach thanks to the efforts of all the guys and gals at Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse. It’s exciting to watch the enthusiasm of everyone involved- from the coaches, referees, spectators, parents and most of all the kids. The 2007 season is destined to be hot!

Hill Middle School, Long Beach, CA, Dec. 16, 2006: It may have been a cold, wet, windy and miserable day at the Walter B Hill Middle School but don’t tell the kids who participated at the Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse ‘Beach Bash’ warm up tourney. They all seemed impervious to the weather and determined to have fun. For the parents however, it was a bit more difficult to stay warm and dry while trying to encourage the spirited play of their kids and grand kids.

We are pleased that we’ve had an opportunity to witness the growth of local lacrosse and document some of the efforts of the local coaches, parents and kids. Lacrosse is very alive at the beach and the future will only get more exciting. I’m sure as we follow these kids through high school, college and maybe some pro lacrosse, we will remember the 2007 Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse League.

Game Referees: L to R- Mike Vanags, Jim Crotwell and Brett Weber

From Glenn Styron, co-founder of Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse: The Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse season got off to a fine start with it’s first set of scrimmages – titled “Beach Bash” by some and “Winter Warm – Up” by others - both names seemed appropriate for this day.

The celebratory nature for the “Beach Bash” was because the parents and organizers have been working for this day for about 2 to 3 years. Jim Crotwell from Seal Beach and Glenn Styron from Long Beach spearheaded a movement to make youth lacrosse a priority in our beach cities area. The additional efforts of Mike Vanags are also valiant as he is instrumental in the Huntington Beach area. So the name “Beach Bash” works pretty well as the junior lacrosse players have a tendency to bash around too.

The “Winter Warm-up” was also apropos as the BCYL is getting its’ legs underneath them and are working through their organizational and logistical scenarios as the league gets officially underway in 2007. Well the cold snap and the rain front brought just a 5-minute downpour at the first game; so “warm-up” might not work for some, as the temperatures hovered around the 50’s for the day. However all the games came off without a hitch and the kids and parents all had a grand lacrosse day. The “Winter Warm-up” also was a time that gave the coaches a chance to see what kind of team they had – and make preparations for their team as they move forward to the new season in 2007. There were no scores or standings kept on this day as the kids only had a couple practices behind them and the concept for this day was to give everyone a taste of what a game day was all about.

Warrior Players Club Clinic

By Bill Howard

The Warrior Players Club put on an amazing clinic following the Feeding Frenzy Middle School Lacrosse Tournament at the Home Depot Center, Carson CA. If you ever get a chance to watch this clinic or have you kids participated- don't miss it!

The Warrior Players Club demonstrated and instructed about 40 kids today in the mechanics of shooting while running, the jump shot, how to add velocity to a goal shot by rotating the whole body and snapping the wrist. More...

Women
Sun, Sand, Surf...and Beach Lacrosse!

Editor's note: A new woman's lacrosse club has formed to play lacrosse on the beaches of Southern California. The club is named the Seal Beach Lacrosse Club. The first woman's team, Seal Beach Rockettes is named after the local Boeing rocket facilities. Here is their story and their ideas about forming a unique lacrosse league......

by Lou Cueva

Seal Beach, CA. - My friends and I love playing lacrosse on the beach - any beach! In fact, part of the fun is planning a new beach to visit every weekend. Seal Beach is our home beach and on the north of us we have Belmont Shores, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, Venice, Santa Monica, etc. We can play on a different beach nearly all summer long.

Glory Days

If you ask former high school or college athletes what they remember most about the glory days, chances are they will recount a memory that has little to do with the game itself. For most athletes, lasting recollections of their playing days center on fond memories like the time a teammate was dared to eat twenty hot dogs on the bus ride home, the way the team clown would mimic the coach's laugh, or how the team stuck together while running in the rain.

US Lacrosse Level 1 Coaches’ Clinic

Editor’s Note: We would like to acknowledge and thank the Amateur Athletic Foundation (AAF) for hosting and providing a grant ($65 per attendee), December 11, 2005 for an all day US Lacrosse Coaches' Educational Program, Level 1 Instruction Clinic. It was held at the Los Angeles Swim Stadium next to the LA Coliseum and was well attended by nearly 100 current and aspiring boys’ and girls’ lacrosse coaches. Classroom and hands on instruction was provided by prominent national coaches.

Los Angeles, CA -

Since I’ve never played lacrosse, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about attending the US Lacrosse coaches’ clinic held recently in Los Angeles. I imagined I would make a fool of myself trying to use a stick or catch a ball and that everyone else would be so much better than me.

To my surprise and appreciation- it was a great day!
